Genetics of Common Conditions
Genetics is often thought to be rare conditions that affect a small percentage of the population, yet 60% of people are likely to develop a disease that is at least partially genetically determined by the age of 60. This module gives an overview of the more common genetic conditions and also discusses the growing area of multifactorial diseases such as heart disease, spina bifida, and psychiatric conditions to name a few.

Module Units

  1. Introductory genetics

  2. Taking a family history

  3. Common genetic conditions

  4. Testing options for common conditions

  5. Support networks and patient resources

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module participants will:

  • Be familiar with the clinical picture of common genetic conditions.

  • Understand the genetic basis of common genetic conditions.

  • Be able to assign risk figures to members of a family pedigree for a range of conditions.

  • Be familiar with available genetic tests, how to request testing, and when to refer to a regional genetic unit.

  • Be aware of empirical recurrence risks for common multifactorial conditions.
