A Service Company

When the Australian Genetic Training Centre (AGTC) was established, our aim was to provide access to a convenient and clinically relevant genetic education service. We saw an increasingly recognised need for this in the public and healthcare that was largely unmet. Through workshops and on-line training AGTC continues to deliver up-to-date, convenient genetic education.

AGTC was co-established by Elvira Zilliacus, a genetic counsellor with eight years experience in prenatal and general genetics. She was the program convenor for the Graduate Diploma in Genetic Counselling and continues to cordinate and tutor in the Graduate Certificate in Human Genetics at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Elvira completed her Masters in Genetic Counselling establishing and evaluating "The Double Testing Program": cystic fibrosis carrier screening and nuchal translucency scanning in early pregnancy. She is currently undertaking PHD research into the delivery of genetic counselling for familial breast/ovarian cancer via telehealth.

AGTC works closely with, and receives clinical input from Hunter Genetics, the Hunter/New England clinical genetics service. It has a planning committee that informs and oversees all development of on-line modules to ensure high quality and clinical relevance. The committee is make up of representatives from the fields of:

  1. General Practice

  2. Clinical Genetics

  3. Genetic Counselling

  4. Adult Education

  5. Nursing & Midwifery

  6. Community Representative
